What Lies Between Us -Nayomi Munaweera – Book Review

The happiness of reading a new book and letting yourselves into the world which the author had meticulously crafted is an experience to be cherished. Nayomi Munaweera’s second novel “What Lies Between Us” portrays a dark picture over the entire stretch of the novel, different from the contrast bright colors which fills the cover design and this keeps the readers in guessing the story of the novel.

The story is set in Sri Lanka and San Francisco, the regions which obviously are home to the author Nayomi Munaweera. The story is narrated by a woman who is unnamed till the end of the story where she describes about her childhood and the traumas she had undergone. Her memories gives us a broader picture of what she has been facing from the childhood and they sure entangle the readers glued to the book.

The author at the inception of the book that the narrator has committed an atrocious crime making the readers puzzled and guessing. This strategy has been earlier adopted by many writers but this book happens in the sub continent country near our nation and we can understand what she tries to convey like a picture. When the story shifts to US, the narrator and her mother adjusts to the situations there doesn’t hit the rock for the readers. She doesn’t let the story get into a lag when the momentum changes half way down the book. Each chapter leads the readers to the crime that has been told in the inception of the book. The characters of the narrator, her mother and father, the gardener Samson, an old cook Sita and her mother’s sisters family all leave an impression with us even though some characters remain for a short period. Her mother’s affection which she describes as unpredictable and breaking things, the lone life she leads as a child also has a impact on the readers. Through these minute characters and detailing, the story doesn’t descends down with the readers and forms an unforgettable experience.

Even though I have read books as dark as this, this books ending and the incidents doesn’t seems to leave my mind for a few days. That is the kind of impact it has on us and the author to be precise has nailed it in this particular story. I haven’t read her previous book “Island of Thousand Mirrors” which I studied in the internet was about the account of the island country’s conflict witnessed by two girls has picked my interest and I am waiting for the book to arrive (Ordered it as soon as I finished this).

I would recommend this book for readers who wish to read something new and explore various cultures. The book is gripping and once you are into the land the author has created for us, we wouldn’t be able to get out of it.
