Half GirlFriend by Chetan Bhagat – Book Review

I was pleased to have the latest release of Chetan Bhagat’s novel “HALF GIRLFRIEND”, which was delivered to me at the earliest. I was puzzled by the excitement that came once the announcement for the pre-order of this book has been seen decorating the first page of a leading daily, partnering with a popular e-commerce site. Well, I got the book for a much lower price on a offer from another e-commerce site and was delivered the next day to my amusement.

I am not a great fan of Chetan Bhagat, but I respect him for the fact that he was man behind making many Indians a reading habit. “I read the novels of Chetan Bhagat and I am great fan of him”  seems to be much of a repeated words among youths these days. As for the fact that three of his novels has been adapted as movies in Bollywood, his reach is so popular.

So I sat on a fine evening with the new book I was delivered with no expectations. The story is rather simple. A boy named Madhav Jha who is bad in English is in love with a rich girl Riya Somani from Delhi, when he met her during college admission in St,Stephens, New Delhi. They both play basketball in-common (From which one can assume they became friends). Madhav Jha wants her to be his girlfriend. But Riya agrees to be his half girlfriend. How they get united forms the crux of the story.

I don’t want to reveal any spoilers  for readers yet to read the book. To be precise, the book seems to be a masala Indian movie. It has all the essence to be made into a perfect masala movie (There are plans going on to make this book into a movie) like the protagonist goes in search of her love to a distant land without a knowledge of where she is, mother who doesn’t want her son to love a rich girl, Drinking. The narration is quite simpler and we can still guess whats been coming next. It contains friendship, love, dedication, etc., but doesn’t seems to impress and engaging. I finished this book in a single sit, doesn’t consuming much time.

So grab a copy if you are a fan of Chetan Bhagat.

Ash Wednesday

Musings of Jonty

Here is the day of the year where you will get to see black or grey smudges of ashes on people of both young and old. It denotes The ASH WEDNESDAY, marking the inception of season of Lent, the season of penance and reflection to prepare for the Easter.

Well in these days the believers fast or renounce any habits and prepare for the Easter. Now a days announcing about the habits that we renounce and about the fasting has become an ostentatious thing.

Loads of jokes about Ash Wednesday have started trending in Twitter & Facebook already.

“Start of the Lent and I renounce the habit of doing my homework”.

“Bye Friends & Facebook. See you on Easter.”

Is Lent really about ostentatious announcements of fasting and other renouncing of habits? That’s a serious issue.

I would advise to refer Mathews 6 th  Chapter to know what Bible…

All smartphones lead to Social media

‘Social Media on Mobile Vs Web – How has it impacted your life?’

Well the title may sound like it’s ripped off from a famous proverb but no one can deny the fact. I am sure. Internet usage particularly usage of social medias has become a quotidian thing in our daily lives.

My first remembrance of using social media is during school days when Orkut was the potentate in Social Media before nascent Facebook. Like everyone else I opened an account in Orkut, enjoyed having one. The testimonials, the messages, curiously opening Orkut to see if our friends are there.

Then Facebook adorned the throne as the King of Social Media with Orkut plummeting. By then every youth of the nation must have attained the level of college and switched over to Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Everyone who wants to gain attention started posting contents. There was no to succumb your thoughts or posts and rather you would get a frenzy crowd with the same mindset and Voila !!

Social Media crept into our minds successfully.

With that began the era of Smartphones that was a caprice to the Indian Technology. Computers cannot be used everywhere so the usage of smartphones became much popular than its counterparts the basic mobile phones. Higher configurations with lowest prices, Latest technology imbibed within and all the activities done in computer are possible with a smartphone. And what else the sales of mobile phones went soaring in the market pushing all manufacturers of mobile to produce smartphones.

Various models, Different configurations and there is Social Media in everything. Though various are user friendly made our lives simpler, people tend to use social media more. There came Whatsapp and demolishing the needs to recharge every month for messages pack. Skype became available on mobiles and there are so many apps.

We see a movie; go to a place, read a book? Go to Facebook , Update Status

“Watching Movie, Listening to, Reading Book, Feeling Happy, Feeling Determined, so and so”

You want to get noticed. Update statuses on the current scenario, click a super cool picture of yours and make it as a profile picture, comment on cricket matches or support your favorite movie stars. Also to find a plethora of friends and widen the friendship circle.

Twitter is totally different from these. All the tweets within 140 characters was like a challenge. People started using it when they found various superstars and celebrities were using it. You tweet, use a hashtag to trend something and feel proud to be a part of it. With this came the trend of Instagram. People started sharing their photographs on Instagram and were able to be followed by so many people. Instagram became a fashionista social media. The photos there define your fashion style.

And all these in the tip of your fingers via your cute little smartphone. We can watch thousands of people with their heads looking over the smartphones while on road walking. What better example do one need for justifying the use of smartphones? Also the growth of smartphones and the social media are at an ginormous level that even political parties are throwing their attention towards them. Soon there will be a day where social media will play an important role in Politics too.

Knowing the breaking news, to debating or arguing on some issues via comments, expressing our thoughts via statuses, tweets, photos via the social medias has given us the freedom of expression of our thoughts with us. True to the fact that Smartphones are responsible for this kinda social media revolution in India with many companies focusing social media promotions for their products.

As far thoughts anything within control never takes any negative effects. May be the social medias may be the order of the future but we have to accept the fact about the negatives of it and clearing them. Over usage of anything leads to diverged feelings often.

So its in our hands to use the social medias properly and with utmost care that seeing us the younger generations will also soon take up the habit.

When was the last time you did something for the first time ?

Most of the time,we don’t like suggestions from others. The reason is that we are aware of what is right. We all need occasional reminders to remember what we have missed . In some point in life,we will cherish the moments that we will remember. These are the circumstances that I want to remind u,so that you will not forgot and get the chance to rewind it .

Read books, because reading has been greatly decreased due to invention of latest technologies. The usage of mobile phones where people don’t find time to read, instead they are busy with texting or calling or with the latest addiction Whatsapp.Reading books divert your mind from everything at least to some extent .If you are not a reader or not even a occasional reader ; give it a try .You will learn a lot while reading . Just give it a try but only physical reading on books and not e-books .

Laugh louder or Laugh it loud. You can’t keep laughing or smiling all day long. Nowadays we are not smiling but using a smiley to tell our joy and laughter. Physical laugh is missing in people all the days. Smileys have made every emotions to be displayed within the touch of a screen. Simple and easy. Every smiley depicts the emotions of various reactions. Actually it reduces the efforts. So laugh it loud.

Spend time with your friends

Time has changed for the same reason of technology. Time has flied so faster that people use Skype to talk with their friends who are nearer within a reach of a walk. Spend your valuable time with your dearest friends so that you won’t rewind some time back. Cherish the best moments of your lifetime with your friends at least once in a month and feel the tensions fly high and surely you will realize that those time which you have spent with your friends will be the one that you remember to be the most good one and a life long cherished event and the most peaceful days. I do accept that Whatsapp, Viber, Hike,Skype are equally important but it’s different and really greater than the talk in a meeting of friends. A roadside talk or a playground meeting of friends talk satisfaction will never come in a group chat in any of those app talks.

Take a walk

When was the last time you went for a long walk ? I know that was a hypothetical question nowadays. We will be frustrated at times when we are forced to walk due to some unavoidable reasons. Try a walk for some distance with your loved ones and you will for sure feel the change. I know it’s too hard but give a try.

Wander without a smartphone

This must be the most difficult thing people can experience. Without a smartphone that too without a GPS. Till the time when we are without a smartphone all we know is to roam to friends house or roam elsewhere , any place which come to the mind or go for the park ( which is common in Neyveli). Whenever this happens or if it had happened , these must be the happiest moment in everybody’s life.

        I hope that this writing will not be accepted by many because smartphones and technology play a vital part in everyone’s life where these points will fail even though it has some great values if it is implemented. I hope that many would have thinked on these aspects and this is not a great ideas but these are very simple things that people around us and even we have forgotten to practice in these days.Consider this to be a changing moment and everything needs a start so take it as a start from now on and if you like it ;

Go “ Do something new for others for the first time
